In Necessaries, an unwilling, disparate group of Midwesterners are charged by entertainment-starved aliens to become the superheroes they never should have been. Polly Hilton has waited all her life for something to happen to her, but all that’s happened so far is an unused bachelor’s degree and a full-time job as a produce stocker. The waiting is over when she wakes up on the steps of a monument, convinced that she’s been abducted by aliens. Soon, she and her fellow unheroic abductees discover that they’ve acquired the impossible abilities of comic book heroes, and the mysterious entity that empowered them demands they participate in a city-wide gladiatorial showdown to determine the fate of the planet. As the game unfolds, the would-be supers face not only alien-manufactured monsters, but the skeptical eyes of the public, clashing personalities within their motley team, and a mystery that could alter Earth’s place in the stars forever.
